According to a report published on Thursday, artificial intelligence (AI) was critical in the development of Novavaxs COVID-Influenza Combination (CIC) vaccine. The findings in the report showed that the vaccine candidate was safe, well tolerated, and produced a high immunological response equivalent to that of the influenza vaccines Fluad and Fluzone HD, as well as Novavaxs COVID vaccine NVX-CoV2373.

The CIC vaccine is made up of three components, including recombinant hemagglutinin (rHA) particles from four different influenza strains (H1N1, H3N2, B-Yamagata, and B-Victoria), SARS-CoV-2 rS nanoparticles, and Novavaxs Matrix-M adjuvant.

A design of experiments (DoE) technique was utilized to predict suitable dose combinations to immunize patients, as well as response surface modeling following vaccination responses. When compared to traditional approaches, the DoE program allowed for more powerful fine-tuning of dosage selection for the COVID and influenza antigens. The report also showed that reduced antigen content in vaccinations was found to be equally immunogenic and resulted in enhanced patient tolerance.

The design of Novavaxs study mirrors a broader industry trend as pharmaceutical companies become increasingly active in employing AI technology. It follows in the footsteps of AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer, all of whom cited AI methods during clinical trials for their COVID vaccines.

According to Global Data, patent activity by pharmaceutical businesses utilizing AI hit an all-time high in 2022, accounting for 61 patent awards, 225 patent applications, and 299 patent publications.
